Bring to Light is New York City’s first-ever Nuit Blanche festival. A Nuit Blanche is an all night arts festival of installations and performances celebrating the magic and luminance of light. Nuit Blanche events enliven cities all around the globe, but there has never been one in New York.

Bring To LightNYC will be held in Greenpoint, Brooklyn primarily on Oak Street between Franklin St. and the East River waterfront in Fall 2010, beginning at sundown. This unique block will play host to local and international artists, performers, galleries, and musicians as they Bring to Light the street itself as well as its unique assets including metal, set design and textile workshops, residential facades, an indoor gymnastics park, and much more.

Making Temporary Public Art & Performance: What Artists Need to Know

Led by Erin Donnelly, Special Projects Consultant, LMCC and Independent Curator

As luxury towers rise, storefronts vacate, and new public spaces are designed, community and street life have become more important than ever. Artists have the opportunity to connect with civic life through the creation of temporary public art. What kinds of resources are available to guide you in making temporary public art in New York City? What essentials must you plan for in order to realize your project? This talk will introduce such resources as well as address such logistical and legal matters as securing locations, obtaining permits, and insurance.

This workshop is free and nearly at capacity. Registrants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis and will receive confirmation by email.

An Open Call for Sound Artist in North Brooklyn

The North Brooklyn Public Art Coalition (NbPac) is pleased to announce an open call for Brooklyn–based artists to propose projects for an upcoming sound installation.

Artists are invited to submit proposals through August 30, 2010.  The selected artist will be notified on September 15, 2010.

Project Description & Guidelines

NbPac invites Brooklyn-based artists to propose projects for a sound installation to be displayed for the greater North Brooklyn community (Bushwick, Greenpoint, Williamsburg) in Spring 2011.  Artists are asked to consider the historical, social, and political atmosphere of North Brooklyn’s community in their proposals for sound art.  A critical element of the project requires artists to select a site and describe how the public will be engaged in that space and with the artwork itself.  Artists are encouraged to create a new work or expand upon former projects that act in response to / in conversation with / or as a commentary on North Brooklyn.  Collaborative group projects are welcome!

Artists interested in being considered for nbAUDIO 2011 should submit a completed Proposal Cover Page (attached), as well as the required attachments by Monday, August 30, 2010.  Proposals received or postmarked after the due date will not be taken into consideration.

About NbPac

The North Brooklyn Public Art Coalition (NbPac) is an arts organization dedicated to collaborating with artists and community stakeholders in Williamsburg, Greenpoint, and Bushwick to produce, present, and support art in public spaces.  Formed in 2009, NbPac is a group of artists, arts administrators, and community members who believe that public art and activated public space is vital to an engaged and integrated neighborhood.  NbPac aims to promote dialogue concerning urban space; enhance the creative profile of artists living and producing art in North Brooklyn; and advocate on behalf of the North Brooklyn arts Community.

By presenting nbAUDIO 2011, NbPac will assist the selected artist by providing professional, financial and logistical support in the creation of the new artwork.  An estimated budget of $5,000 will be used for research, production, and installation of the piece.

Unveiling Onsite with Artist at 3pm, Opening Celebration (Roof Party!) to follow at The Ceeflat, 988 Manhattan Avenue (at Huron) Greenpoint, Brooklyn (Suggested $15 donation in support of Future Phenonema and NbPac)

Future Phenomena, a large-scale, fabric sculpture created by local artist Amanda Browder, will blanket the façade of 1066 Manhattan Avenue through Sunday, June 20th.

Amanda and NbPac are hosting Community Sewing Date #3 this Saturday, May 1st from 2-5pm at Gymnasium of Saints Joseph and Dominic Catholic Academy, 140 Montrose Ave., Bushwick, Brooklyn.

No sewing skills necessary.  We’ll be sorting, cutting, measuring and having fun.  Drop in for two minutes or two hours! Fabric donations welcome!
