Our first sewing event for Future Phenomena took place on Saturday and was a huge success- we sewed over 850 feet (!) of donated fabric! Those of you who couldn’t make it but still want to help should save the date for our next sewing event, taking place on April 18th at 129 Russell Street in Greenpoint.

The Abron Arts Center Artist-in-Residence Workspace Program is now accepting applications for the 2010-2011 residency. The AIR Workspace Program provides free studio space for visual artists for 11 months (beginning September 2010). Applications are due May 1, 2010, 5pm.
The Northside Town Hall Community and Cultural Center Inc., (NTHCCC) is looking for artists to present their work in the currently vacant Engine 212 Firehouse – the future home of the NTHCC. All applicants MUST attend a site visit on March 20th from 2pm – 4pm before submitting their proposal. Deadline for Applications is March 31st, 2010.

The Trinity Project is an art and community exchange program with a home base at Most Holy Trinity Church in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Artists of all disciplines can get free or low-cost space for their projects in exchange for volunteer teaching at Saints Joseph and Dominic Catholic Academy or general volunteering with Most Holy Trinity Church.
To further our mission of support for local artists, NbPac will be adding and updating our directory of opportunities and resources for artists in North Brooklyn in the coming weeks. Opportunities are deadline-based calls for proposals for specific projects in the Tri-State New York area. Resources are local organizations dedicated to bolstering the artistic and creative communities in New York City, particularly Williamsburg, Bushwick and Greenpoint.

Coming soon in spring 2010, the North Brooklyn Public Art Coalition (NbPac) is proud to present Amanda Browder’s Future Phenomena. This large-scale, fabric public art sculpture will be temporarily affixed to the façade of an apartment building in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, where its psychedelic spectacle of bright colors and flowing shapes will be a representation of a group effort in a local community.
Greenpoint and Williamsburg are prime examples of the transformative effects of mass consumption and gentrification, with its ever more degraded earth and mass of abandoned construction sites. With these ill-effects come renewed community activism—embodied by North Brooklyn’s growing efforts to reuse, recycle, and to renew its neighborhoods. Greenpoint and Williamsburg are century-long experiments in the sustainability of urban life. Future Phenomena will not only be a fantastic work to behold, but its focus on recycled materials, public space, and community volunteerism will draw attention to local concerns such as gentrification, pollution, and urban migration.
As part of the conceptual nature of the piece, Browder and NbPac will host three Community Sewing Days and enlist the public‘s participation in the creation of the immense, sewn work (see Community Sewing Days). Volunteers will play an integral role in making Future Phenomena a reality by sewing the chevron shape, donating recycled materials, and transforming Browder’s project into a communal gesture. Through the artist’s and the community’s energy, discarded objects and materials will be transformed into an awe-inspiring work of abstract art.
Amanda Browder’s Future Phenomena is presented by North Brooklyn Public Art Coalition. Future Phenomena is sponsored, in part, by the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, administered by the Brooklyn Arts Council, Inc. (BAC).

About the Artist
Born in Missoula, MT in 1976, Amanda Browder currently lives in Brooklyn, NY. She received her MFA/MA from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 2001, and taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago from 2001-07. She received a Chicago Community Arts Assistant Program Grant in 2006 and 2007. She has exhibited nationally and internationally at the Nakaochiai Gallery, Tokyo, Japan; Lothringer 14, Munich, Germany; White Columns, New York; Mixture Contemporary Gallery, Houston, TX; The Missoula Museum of the Arts, Missoula, MT; Gallery 400-UIC, and The Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago. Join Brooklyn artist Amanda Browder and North Brooklyn Public Art Coalition (NbPac) in the construction of Future Phenomena, Browder’s temporary public art project sponsored by NbPac and the Brooklyn Arts Council. DONATE – Contribute your unused fabric to help make the piece! We are covering a building and we need a lot of materials! Looking for cotton, sheets, pants, and non-stretchy fabric, and sewing tools such as needles, thread, and scissors. We are also seeking to borrow sewing machines for just one day or donations of machines for the project. CUT – Help cut fabric to form the chevron shape which will make a true spectacle!
SEW – Help sew with easy straight stiches on a sewing machine (tutoring available!) to physically bind the donated fabrics into it’s awesome shape.
CONVERSE – Help cheer on people working, make new friends and meet other community members, learn and collaborate

This Saturday, February 6th, Brooklyn-based artist Amanda Browder, along with NbPac, will propose community art installation Future Phenomena at FEAST, the pay-as-you-wish dinner/fundraiser in Greenpoint for local art projects.

Future Phenomena is a collaborative project involving community participation and utilizing recycled materials. A repeated Chevron pattern will be sewn by volunteers using fabric donated by residents and the NYC-based recycling group Wearable Collections. The vibrant sculptural installation will then be wrapped on a building in the neighborhood for a one to two-day period. Once the piece is installed all FEAST participants will be invited to our weekend-long celebration this Spring.

On December 13th, public art lovers gathered in Williamsburg’s McCarren Park for the lighting of Jason Krugman’s Living Objects, the second installation by NbPac and one of the largest public art installations in the park’s history. Despite the wet weather, the crowd created a festive atmosphere in the park, cheering and clapping when the sculptures were lit and hundreds of LED lights radiated through the figures’ “skin.” Following the ceremony, viewers headed to Light-Up Brooklyn for a reception and to celebrate the grand opening.
Living Objects is the culmination of months of creating, planning, and coordination amongst Krugman, NbPac, and their collaborators, including Open Space Alliance and the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation. Ciara McKeown, director of NbPac, hopes that Living Objects will help to connect “viewers with the park as a public space and to the essence of public art.” The project was made possible by lead sponsorship from Light-Up Brooklyn. http://www.lightupbrooklyn.com/
